Instagram_Icon_LargeInstagram first appeared on the scene in 2010 as a place “where you can capture and share the world’s moments simply and beautifully”, and in less than 3 years, has grown to 130 million monthly active users.

This free photo app can be used by the iPhone, iPad and Android phones, and if you haven’t yet tried it yourself, chances are, you’ve at least seen the photos in your Facebook or Twitter newsfeed.

The Business Case

If you can tell the story of your business using photographs or video, you might want to consider joining this social network. A picture can convey emotion and personality in seconds so it’s a great way to extend your brand’s online presence. With the addition of video in June 2013 its functionality is even greater. Perfect for demonstrating a process that you take your clients through, or for showing the “how” behind the “what” of your business. Let your imagination flow!

Consider Your Target Audience

Like most social networks, users of this tool skew toward a younger demographic. During November-December 2012, Pew Research surveyed Americans’ use of the Internet to find that

Thirteen percent of internet users are taking and sharing pictures with Instagram. Women are more likely than men to use the site, as are those under 50. African-Americans and Hispanics are more likely than whites to use Instagram, along with urban residents.

Because the survey was administered to Americans age 18 and older, there are no results for younger users. But I’d bet if a younger cohort had been included in the survey, results would show heavy usage among this demographic as well. My 16-yr old daughter uses Instagram more than Facebook!

I know, I know, I can hear you now: “But Cara Lynn, the last thing I need right now is another social network to attend to!” So ask yourself these questions before you download the app:

  • Is your target audience young and social?
  • Do you have an eye for composing great photos? Do you have a sense of video editing?
  • Do you use an iPhone, iPad or Android smartphone? (no official Blackberry app yet)

If you answer yes to these questions, you might enjoy great success with Instagram!

When you’re ready to jump in, here’s a great resource from Mashable. Although it’s a bit dated it’s extremely relevant and helpful. I’d recommend you set up a personal account first and practice with that before you go live with your business account.

Another great resource is from Instagram itself: http://help.instagram.com/
